A Regency period giltwood framed mirror with vine leaf decoration.
With gilt wood framed surround, this unusual mirror has a silk velvet lined, inset border with superbly detailed papier mache vine leaf foliage decoration pinned within the recess. The original and mildly foxed mirror plate has a typical Regency ebonised and reeded fillet surround
This extremely rare and unusual early mirror was initially considered to be French owing to the use of papier mache rather than composition for its decorative elements however, the bole used under the gilding is grey and is a type used only during the early nineteenth century in England and the ebonised slip is also synonymous with the period.
Please note, that the original velvet was too perished to be saved and it has been replaced with some appropriate Italian silk velvet, colour matched to the original by a qualified textile conservator.
A unique and truly opulent mirror.
