Art Deco White Onyx & Malachite Cigarette Box by Henry Griffith & Sons
A charming and super quality Art Deco white onyx & malachite cigarette box by Henry Griffith & Sons of Birmingham & Leamington Spa.
With beautifully veined onyx and inlaid malachite stringing to the lid. The box has a brass finger lift with further inset malachite and a brass fitted hinge stamped along the face with “HG&S and Made in England”. The soft close hinge is similar to those manufactured and patented by George Betjemann in the late nineteenth century to avoid chipping to the stone upon closure.
Henry Griffiths & Sons was formed in the late 1840’s by Henry Griffith silversmith with his sons following him into the business during the late nineteenth century.
In the 1919, the firm moved into a purpose built factory in Leamington Spa where they continued to trade until the early 1980’s. This box would have been manufactured in this establishment (pictured) which itself is a great example of the period’s architecture.
Examples of these boxes were also made by Betjemann and retailed at Asprey and Cartier. This box may well have been produced for retail at the latter two establishments.
In super condition, this example has no chips or nibbles to the stone.
