Early Nineteenth Century Mahogany & Leather Wingback Library Armchair

£0

A most unusual and well-proportioned nineteenth century mahogany and leather wingback library chair.

The serpentine shape of the wings are the most pronounced that we have seen on a chair of this type and coupled with the camel back ridge of the top rail it makes for a rather interesting and pleasing development.

The design is reflective of that which appeared in Hepplewhite’s Cabinet and Upholsterer’s Guide of forty to fifty years previous in the late 1780’s. Clearly the leg styles have changed but the affiliation is easily understood from the attached pictures.

Quality early nineteenth century examples are increasingly difficult to find and this is the best I’ve seen in a while. Complete with new black leather upholstery, this chair is ready to exist for another two hundred years.
