A Mid-Eighteenth Century Chippendale Period Rococo Carved Giltwood Pier Mirror
A phenomenally rare mid-Eighteenth Century Rococo Carved Giltwood Pier mirror.
This highly unusual mirror is topped with acanthus leaf decoration and rococo ‘C’ scrolls surrounds. The base is adorned with sunflower motif and a chinoiserie face where a sconce once would have been secured through the mouth.
Most of the decoration is typical of the Chippendale period in the mid-eighteenth century but the shape is very uncommon which lead me to believe that it is perhaps an Italian mirror of the period.
The sunflower in Chinese mythology is a sign of longevity or a long life as is the acanthus leaf in classical Greek mythology.
An truly stunning mirror in superb condition.
