A Set of Four Regency / George IV Mahogany Trafalgar Dining Chairs
A set of four Regency / George IV Mahogany Dining Chairs upholstered in beautiful blue Regency stripe with rope work motif.
These chairs date to the late period of George IV’s reign and show the final development of the Trafalgar chair prior to the onset of the balloon back style that grew popular during the reign of William IV and Queen Victoria. The sabre leg of the Regency had given way to vertical reeded carving incorporated with turned decoration and the backrests had also reduced in size by this point but the look is somewhat softer and more appealing than the stern rigidity of earlier Regency examples.
The additional pictures show examples that were produced in pattern books by the likes of Thomas King and William Smee during this period and you may notice an almost identical chair produced by Smee at the time. Marked Smee furniture is rare so there is no direct evidence that this set emanated specifically from the company’s manufacture but it certainly confirms the quality of these examples. Coupled with the exquisite quality of the mahogany chosen, this is a desirable set which demonstrates the period perfectly.
