Mid Victorian Mahogany Library Book Slide with Screw Mechanism
A rare and unique Victorian Mahogany Book Slide with screw mechanism.
Of unusually large proportions this book slide contains a screw mechanism not unlike those utilised in dining room tables and music stools of the period. Manufacturers such as Joseph Fitter were supplying the cabinet making trade throughout the Nineteenth Century for various reasons and this is one such ingenious creation.
The book slide itself has one fixed book end at the same end as the turning mechanism that allows the other book end to traverse the length of the structure and fit the required number of books.
Beautifully made, this statement piece seems likely to be a one off bespoke piece as I can find no others that have been marketed but owing to its size, must have graced an impressive sideboard or library table.
A real Country House Library piece circa 1870
