Set of Four Regency period Dining Chairs in the manner of Gillows.
For sale, a set of four Regency period Dining Chairs in the manner of Gillows.
The chair design with its back flowing into the heightened side rails is a feature of the Trafalgar chair made famous following Nelson’s Victory against the French and Spanish Fleets. Unusually though, this example terminates in the Sheraton style “turned out toes” circa 1803 rather than the sabre leg so common throughout the period.
An almost exact top rail design was featured in Gillows’ “Cabinet Makers’ General Sketchbook” of 1810 now held in the Westminster Archive Centre (See Susan E. Stuart’s book “ Gillows of Lancaster & London 1730 – 1840”)
The chairs have had the black finish restored and have been recaned ready for general use. New seat cushions can be provided for additional cost and in a fabric of your choice.
